Take Massive Action to Complete Your Project - Perfection is Over-Rated
Ok... I hate to burst your bubble but someone has to do it.
You're not perfect. Your project won't be perfect the first time through; the
garage isn't going to get done all in one day and that six-pack you wanted?
It'll happen all right but not before you spend many hours in the gym. With a
trainer. Eating only tuna and lettuce.
Perfectionism is a major cause of procrastination. All too
often we won't even start something new because we're sure we won't do it
right. We cede the game even before the playing has started. When we're really
determined to end up in a state of flawlessness we make the tasks getting there
all that more difficult. We get through the project after much pain and misery
and more often than not are too tired to even realize the wonderful job we've
done. Next time we go to do that job? All we can remember is that the last job
was painful and didn't work out as well as we wanted. What do we do? Work
harder the next time around. This might never stop!
Perfectionism is procrastination when we use it to postpone tasks
("I can't start my project until I know the 'right' way to do it." or
("This will never be perfect. What's the use in wasting time starting on
it!") Don't think this way! Set new goals that allow for error. One of
Warren Buffet's top five lessons in life is to not focus too much on the
outcome. Just show up and get started!
There are lots of folks not waiting for the nirvana of
perfectionism. Let's go over a few examples to really cement this concept. What
about someone getting rich on perfect software. Nope..think Bill Gates and
Windows 95. He didn't wait for perfect. What about Da Vinci and the Mona Lisa.
There's a gal with a few character flaws! Don't even get me started on Jackson
Pollock. There's a fellow who just went for it!
I get it already. The people we look up to, admire or just
marvel about aren't perfect. How about this one? Having the perfect hair in
real estate? Nope. Don't need it there either. Think Donald Trump. Clearly you
don't even have to have good hair to be mega successful! (Sorry, couldn't
resist!)
Perfectionism is a belief that anything less than perfect is
unacceptable. This will shut you down before you've even started. I'm not
saying give it up and forget all about being the best. I'm saying being the
best should mean striving for excellence. More importantly, it should mean
striving for your excellence.
